Running southeast from downtown toward Galveston is Houston's first freeway, the Gulf Freeway, I-45 South. Parts of the southern fringe of Houston are among the fastest growing in the entire region. Ashome to NASA Johnson Space Center, as well as to the third largest boating center in the United States, Clear Lake has a great deal to offer. Clear Lake was built near the bay that empties into the Gulf of Mexico. It lies about half way between downtown Houston and Galveston on I-45 South. The city of Houston annexed Clear Lake City in 1976, but eight surrounding communities comprise the area: Clear Lake Shores, El Lago, Kemah, League City, Nassau Bay, Seabrook, Taylor Lake Village and Webster. The population of Clear Lake and the eight townships totals approximately 156,000. Prices span from $120,000 to more than $2 million. High flying types will appreciate the close proximity of Hobby Airport just 10 miles away.
The city of Friendswood lies farther south, on the west side of the Gulf Freeway. Some of the homes in this area sit on several acres, others on smaller subdivision lots. Prices in this area range from the $100's to the $800's, or more.
Pearland is one of the fastest growing cities in the Gulf Coast region. Located in northern Brazoria County and southern Harris County, Pearland is strategically located between Highway 288 and I-45 and is adjacent to Beltway 8. Housing prices range from $120,000 to $500,000. Silverlake is a master planned community.
Many newcomers are surprised to learn that Galveston, and island on the Texas Gulf Coast, is just a little more than a one-hour drive from Houston. Galveston is home to many residents who work in or on the fringes of Houston. Housing options in Galveston range from stately Victorian-era mansions along Broadway Boulevard to beach-front villas and bungalows. Resort water-front properties are the hottest segment of the market, with prices of $200,000 or more.
